Egypt beats Congo 2-1 in first World Cup qualifier

CAIRO: Amr Zaki and Ahmed Abdel-Malik of Egypt scored in the second half Sunday and Egypt rallied for a 2-1 win over Congo in the first round World Cup qualifying game.

Congo dominated the first half and Herita Ilunga gave his team the lead in the 44th, getting the ball after a free kick to shoot it past Egypt goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary.

Egypt had several players missing with injuries, but started pressing its opponent in the second half as the Congolese side looked content with protecting its lead.

Zaki equalized with a long-range shot in the 68th, and Abdel-Malik then scored the winner with a high shot in the 79th. -AP
