CAIRO: Today the Korba will witness the implementation of the governor of Cairo’s decision to close Baghdad Street to traffic, making it a pedestrian-only street every Friday from 10 am to 10 pm.

The Cairo Traffic Department has set up signs and barricades to direct traffic and parking in the famous Heliopolis street before and during the weekly closure.

General Adel Taha, the head of the Heliopolis District, said that rules were set to regulate shops’ and restaurants’ usage of the pedestrian-only street on Fridays. Taha said the shops are instructed to remove their merchandise/tables from the street display once the street is open to traffic. The district’s garbage collection services, he continued, would double their efforts from 10 am to 10 pm on Friday.

Last month, the same street hosted the third annual Korba Festival under the auspices of First Lady Suzanne Mubarak. This year participants called for assigning a day each week to turn the street into a promenade, creating space for talent shows and free entertainment.
