CAIRO: Twelve people were killed and 16 others wounded on Friday when two speeding passenger buses rammed into a truck in southern Egypt, the official MENA news agency reported.
The buses were heading south from Cairo to the Nile city of Assiut when one tried to overtake the other and rammed into the truck carrying gravel traveling in the opposite direction, MENA said.
The second bus also collided into the truck, the agency said, adding that speed was also the cause of the accident.
Egyptian roads are among the most dangerous in the world. Around 6,000 people die each year in accidents and 30,000 are wounded, according to the transport ministry.
Most accidents are caused by speeding and flouting the rules of the road. A new controversial traffic law that promises to crack down on road violations went into effect Friday. -AFP
