EL-ARISH: Egyptian authorities have discovered eight tunnels used for smuggling goods in to the Gaza Strip, a security official said on Tuesday.

Since Saturday, authorities have found eight tunnels linking Egypt to the Gaza Strip, the official told AFP. Some of them contained petrol cans and cigarettes.

The official said no arrests had been made and that the tunnels would be destroyed in the next few days.

Israel, which sealed Gaza off to all but very limited humanitarian aid after Hamas seized power in June 2007, has repeatedly accused Egypt of doing too little to counter alleged arms smuggling into the Gaza Strip.

The charges have been vehemently denied by Cairo.

Israel has made a truce with Palestinian militant groups conditional on an end to weapons smuggling into the besieged territory. -AFP
