CAIRO: Israeli foreign ministry director Aharon Abramovich met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Sunday to discuss peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Egyptian foreign ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said they met within the framework of Egyptian-Israeli contacts to discuss peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel.

Aboul Gheit underlined the need to achieve progress in the peace talks, and said Israel should show understanding of the need to strengthen Palestinian infrastructure and improve Palestinian living conditions, Zaki said.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas held a new round of peace talks in Jerusalem earlier on Sunday.

After the talks a senior Israeli government official said Israel wants to reach a peace deal with the Palestinians by the end of the year but postpone a final agreement on the future status of Jerusalem. -AFP
