CAIRO: This week the Human Rights Council at the United States Congress will discuss the latest developments in opposition Ghad party leader Ayman Nour s health status, his wife Gamil Ismail told Daily News Egypt.
Nour, who was sentenced to five years for allegedly forging powers of attorney for the foundation of Al Ghad party, has been suffering from health setbacks after a stroke hit his left leg last week, restricting his movement inside prison.
Although the recent financial crisis stole all the attention in Congress, most senators I met like Nita Loy, head of the human rights committee, Frank Wolf and republican presidential candidate John McCain expressed huge interest in the issue of democracy and political reform in Egypt, Ismail, said in a telephone conversation from New York.
Ayman s health is getting worse without receiving any medical treatment. The guards moved him from his cell to the visitors room on a wheel chair because he can t walk, Ayman Barakat, Nour s lawyer told Daily News Egypt after visiting him in Tora prison Thursday.
He was depressed; he seemed to be frail and spoke with great difficulty, Barakat added.
Ismail said that she had previously met with US President George Bush during the United Nations General Assembly meeting along with democracy activists from all over the world.
I criticized President Bush concerning his administration s support for autocratic regimes which has badly affected the people who are ruled by these regimes, Ismail said.
She added that she will meet with Sarah Palin, vice presidential candidate for McCain, to discuss the issue.
