CAIRO: In the face of accusations, Noha Roushdy, who won a landmark sexual harassment case last week, confirmed on Friday that she carries an Egyptian passport, refuting claims by two lawyers that she is an Israeli citizen.
Lawyers Naglaa El-Emam and Nabieh Al-Wahsh separately accused Roushdy of being an Israeli citizen and of having bad intentions behind the sexual harassment charges she had filed.
Al-Wahsh said in a fax sent to the prosecutor general that Roushdy is an Israeli and is looking to harm Egypt s national interests.
He also called on the prosecutor general to have Roushdy arrested and release her Sherif Gomaa Gibrial, the driver who was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined LE 5,001 for harassing Roushdy in broad daylight last June.
On the other hand, Al-Masry Al-Youm published an article Thursday in which El-Emam – identified as Roushdy’s lawyer – had decided to instead file an appeal on behalf of Gibrial after coming across more details about Roushdy.
Roushdy confirmed to Daily News Egypt that El-Emam was never her lawyer but had only attended the court session as part of a human rights group’s show of solidarity.
She is a fraud, said Amal Abdel Hady, women s rights activist and a friend of Roushdy. She switched sides in only two weeks, she was in the court to support the case and now she turned against it, she added.
