AL-ARISH: Egypt has seized a ton of TNT in the Sinai peninsula that officials believe was probably destined for the Gaza Strip, a security source said on Friday.

Boxes of the powerful explosive were found in an underground hideout in the center of peninsula after police were tipped off by local residents, the official said.

The TNT was probably destined for Gaza, he said, adding that no arrests have yet been made in the case.

Israel and the United States often accuse Egypt of not doing more to halt the flow of illegal weapons into the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

Cairo disputes this, saying security forces often uncover tunnels under the border with Gaza that are used by smugglers of weapons and contraband. -AFP
