ISMAILIA: Traffic through the Suez Canal was halted briefly on Sunday after a collision between a Panamanian cargo ship and an Egyptian passenger ferry, a canal official told AFP.

There were no injuries reported in the accident, which happened near the Red Sea entrance of the waterway and closed the canal for just half an hour.

“The Panamanian ship, with a 12,000-ton cargo, was allowed to proceed on its way after guaranteeing that it would pay for the damage sustained by the ferry, the official said.

The Suez Canal is Egypt s third-largest source of revenue after tourism and remittances from expatriate workers, and currently about 7.5 percent of global trade passes through it. -AFP
