CAIRO: The number of Egyptian students studying in the United States in the 2007-2008 academic year reached 1,776, a six percent increase from the previous year, according to the “Open Doors 2008 report from the International Institute for Education (IIE).
Egyptian students were part of an overall 7 percent increase in the total number of international students in the United States, which reached a record high of 623,000 students from all over the world.
At the same time, the number of American students in Egypt increased by 10 percent to a new high of 1,100. Egypt remains the leading destination for American students in the Arabic-speaking world.
In discussing the report, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Goli Ameri stated that “in today’s competitive international environment, the increase in enrollments noted in this year’s Open Doors data demonstrates again that the US remains the premier destination for international students. The US government joins the US higher education community in a commitment to welcome international students to the United States.
Over the past year, in order to help students in other countries gain access to an American education, the Department of State has expanded support for educational advising around the world at EducationUSA advising centers where international students and their families can obtain information about the broad range of educational opportunities offered by US colleges and universities.
