Google has released a list of the top 10 fastest rising terms typed into the search engine for 2008, and Egypt’s first was reserved for football.
Google announced its annual Zeitgeist report for 2008 Tuesday, highlighting search term patterns for 37 countries including Egypt.
Along with the requisite social networking sites, the search terms also included Suzanne Tamim, the Lebanese singer who was murdered in July and for which Egyptian businessman Hisham Talaat Moustafa is currently standing trial. She was third on the fastest rising list.
The list released for Egypt was that of the fastest rising search queries, which not necessarily meant the highest search numbers in terms of hits, but rather which saw a dramatic rise in a short period of time.
“The fastest rising sites are measured over a specific period of time, says Mona Fouad, accounts manager at Media Waves, the PR firm that handles Google in Egypt, “so it differs from day to day.
“So for example, when the Olympics were on, at that certain time people will search for it. In Egypt, for example, when the Suzanne Tamim case happened people wanted to know what was going on. Currently the fastest rising search would be for the Bush shoe incident, she adds.
Additionally, the lists do not reflect the amount of traffic to the site, but specifically the number of times people in various countries typed specific terms in the Google search engine.
“They are searched terms, so these are results coming about from the terms that people enter in the search bar, Fouad says.
Top of the list was the site superkoora.com, once again highlighting Egyptian obsession with football. Second on the fastest rising list was a site for women, www.fatakat.com.
On a global level, the fastest rising search term for 2008 was US republican Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. In second place was “Beijing 2008 and the term “facebook login rounded up the top three. The search term “obama came in at sixth.
