The Writers Guild of America Wednesday announced its nominations to the 2009 WGA screenplay awards – an indicator for the Oscars – that include latest Batman franchise The Dark Knight, Doubt and Milk.

The 2009 WGA Awards for best original screenplay, adapted screenplay and documentary screenplay will be held Feb. 7 in New York and Los Angeles, two weeks ahead of the Feb. 22 Oscars.

Up for the WGA Best Original Screenplay are Milk, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Visitor, The Wrestler and Burn after Reading.

Nominees to the Best Adapted Screenplay award include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Dark Knight, Doubt, Frost/Nixon and Slumdog Millionaire.

Other Hollywood groups bestowing awards before the Oscars include the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), Producers Guild of America (PGA) and Directors Guild of America (DGA).

These awards are considered stronger indications for the Oscars than the Golden Globe awards, to be announced on Sunday, since the groups include many of the more than 5,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that vote for the acclaimed Academy Awards, widely known as the Oscars. -AFP
