Polls show Americans are divided on US involvement in Gaza conflict

CAIRO: A recent Gallup poll found that 52 percent of Americans would not urge the Bush administration to get more involved in the Gaza conflict.

The poll gauged the views of Americans regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

When asked if the Bush administration should be doing more for the Gaza conflict, 33 percent of Americans said that the Bush administration should try to resolve the conflict. Meanwhile, 30 percent said that the administration is doing the right amount and 22 percent said it should be doing less. Around 15 percent have no opinion regarding the matter.

Through a poll conducted according to ones political ideology, 50 percent of liberals lean towards the Bush administration taking action.

Around 34 percent of conservatives said the Bush administration is taking the right amount of action, while 24 percent believe it should do more.

Moderates voted 32 percent for taking more action, 26 percent said it was doing the right amount and 23 percent thought a less active role was appropriate.

The views of the Democrats were equally distributed with 45 percent pressing for more action.

On the other hand, 18 percent of Republicans believe the Bush administration needs to intensify its involvement, while 71 percent believe otherwise.

Views within the Bush administration varied according to political affiliation. Forty-five percent of Democrats and 33 percent of Republicans favor taking action.

When asked about Obama s seemingly neutral attitude towards the issue, 19 percent believed that he should state his position clearly, while 75 percent thought he should wait until he is in office.
