NICOSIA: A 28-year-old Egyptian worker was killed on Thursday when he was struck by lightning while working in a field during a thunderstorm, Cyprus police said.

The man was found motionless on the ground immediately after co-workers witnessed a strip of lightning light up the sky in a rural area close to the capital Nicosia, said police.

The death occurred during some of the worse weather experienced by the holiday island welcoming the end of a two-year drought.

Most of the island was battered by strong winds, thunderstorms, hail and snow causing flooding and traffic chaos in various areas. -AFP
