CAIRO: Police have arrested a high school teacher who allegedly threw boiling water in a pupil s face, a security official said on Monday.

The 12-year-old boy was taken to a Cairo hospital with second degree burns to his face after the teacher allegedly threw a kettle full of water at him for interrupting his break.

The incident happened after the boy went to the staff room several times, at other teachers request. On his third visit, tasked with relaying a message from another teacher, the accused allegedly threw the kettle at him.

The suspect could be charged with assault and abuse of authority, the official said.

In December, a court jailed mathematics teacher Haitham Nabil Abdel Hamid for six years for kicking a schoolboy to death for failing to do his homework.

At the time Abdel Hamid s lawyer was quoted as saying: Hitting [a child] is not banned in schools and my client did not break the law. -AFP
