WIGAN: Egypt striker Amr Zaki has been fined by Wigan for failing to returning on time from World Cup duty and faces an uncertain future at the Premier League club.
Zaki also apologized to manager Steve Bruce and his teammates, after being accused by the club of being unprofessional and showing disrespect for the fans.
I clarified many things to Bruce, Zaki told Al-Hayat TV after Friday s meeting with Bruce and club officials. He understood my reasons for staying in Egypt during the past week but told me I should have returned immediately to England after the Zambia match.
He wanted my hamstring injury to be assessed by Wigan medics. I apologized to him and we ended up laughing. I may return to training after a week. I m determined to do my best in the remaining Premier League matches.
The 26-year-old Zaki has scored 11 goals for Wigan during on a season-long loan from Zamalek but his late return has strained the relationship between player and club.
He said the reason for his behavior was personal but he understands he has done wrong and will accept the fine the club has imposed, Wigan chief executive Brenda Spencer said Saturday. This whole affair has been very disappointing and the club are keen to draw a line under it.
Steve has told him that the door is not closed but he has a lot to do to earn a place back in the team. That is before we discuss anything more long term. -AP
