A European theater operator wants to produce a musical version of Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar’s 1988 movie Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, one of its executives said Sunday. I have talked about the project with him, and it was also proposed that it be staged on Broadway, but he remains silent, Julia Gomez Cora, Spanish director for Stage Entertainment told the daily newspaper Publico. He has not said yes or no, but let s be realistic, Almodóvar is reluctant. But I will continue to insist, she added. Almodóvar’s film, a melodramatic tragedy mixed with frenetic comedy, helped launch Almodóvar’s international career. It also helped boost the careers of its stars, Carmen Maura and Antonio Banderas. It tells the tale of a depressed woman s efforts to track down her ex-lover to find out why he left her and includes a famous scene involving a blender full of gazpacho spiked with sleeping pills. Almodóvar’s 17th film, Los Abrazos Rotos or Broken Embraces, opened in Spain last month. Stage Entertainment owns theaters, theater productions and venues throughout the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Britain, Russia, Italy, France and Spain. -AFP
