ASSIUT: Police say three people have been shot dead in a generations-old clan feud in southern Egypt.
Police General Ibrahim Saber says Abdel-Salam Marei was shot and killed in the early hours of Saturday when his car was ambushed by members of the rival Hawaysha family, avenging a family death that happened 70 years earlier.
Saber says two other men, not part of the Marei family, were also killed in the attack which took place in the village of Al-Mutia, 415 kilometers south of Cairo near Assiut city. Two others were injured.
Egypt s underdeveloped southern half is famous for its wealth of ancient Egyptian monuments, but is also plagued by tribal politics involving long-running vendettas. -AP
