RAFAH: Delegations from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party and the Hamas movement that controls the Gaza Strip arrived in Egypt on Friday for a new round of unity talks, a security official said.
The delegations entered Egypt through the divided town of Rafah, which straddles the border with Gaza.
The Hamas delegation is headed by former foreign minister Mahmoud Zahar and the Fatah delegation by Zakaria Al-Agha, the official said.
The two groups, which have been bitterly divided since Hamas seized control of Gaza in June 2007, are due to kick off their latest round of talks in Cairo on Saturday.
Egyptian efforts to reconcile them have so far foundered amid disagreements on the composition and obligations of a proposed unity government. -AFP
