Smuggler killed in Gaza-Egypt tunnel collapse

EL-ARISH: Egyptian police recovered a body from the rubble of a tunnel used to smuggle goods into the besieged Gaza Strip on Sunday, a security official said.

The body of a man in his thirties who appears to be Palestinian was found after hours of digging following the collapse of the tunnel which happened on Saturday, the official said.

The tunnel was in the heart of the divided border town of Rafah, the official said.

Earlier on Sunday, police found half a ton of explosives and a weapons cache near the border with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, another security official told AFP.

Police found around 500 kg of TNT explosives in Sheikh Zweid town in north Sinai, the official said.

Security forces also discovered a hideout stashed with weapons including large amounts of rockets and mines from which smugglers extract the explosive material which is then smuggled to Gaza , he added.

Israel says Gaza fighters use tunnels under the Egyptian border to smuggle weapons into the besieged Palestinian territory. -AFP
