CAIRO: An engineer who was sentenced to death for killing his wife, son and daughter in January was found dead in his jail cell on Sunday.
The prison doctor who examined Sherif Kamal Al-Din’s body said that the death was from natural causes, spurred by Kamal Al-Din’s refusal to eat and reliance on glucose solutions.
The deceased was on death row, awaiting the Egyptian Grand Mufti’s final decision after he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death last May.
In a shocking televised confession broadcast on TV from court, Kamal Al-Din said that he wanted to receive the death sentence.
He admitted to beating his family to death with a bat on Jan. 15. During the interrogation, he attributed the crime to stress following huge financial losses in the stock market. Kamal Al-Din tried to commit suicide after he committed the murders, but was rescued.
He said that he had lost LE 1 million in the Egyptian stock market and that a mysterious business associate had made off with LE 3 million that Kamal Al-Din was investing on behalf of some acquaintances.
He had previously told his lawyer that he wanted to end his family’s life and to kill himself to save them from destitution. -Daily News Egypt
