Egyptian Ambassador to Poland detained over bribery allegations, says report

CAIRO: The Egyptian Ambassador to Poland has been detained in Cairo in connection with corruption allegations made against him involving a land deal in Warsaw, Polish media reported.

According to Polskie Radio, Dorota Tietz, spokesperson for the Warsaw police, said that two Polish lawerys have been detained on fraud charges in a real estate sale to the Egyptian Embassy.

The ambassador allegedly accepted a bribe of ?330,000 from the two lawyers in a land deal through which the Egyptian embassy lost ?1.42 million, Polish radio said.

A press officer at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign affairs declined to comment, saying he doesn’t have information about the case.

If convicted, both lawyers, hired by the Egyptian embassy to broker the deal, face up to 10 years in prison, Polish radio said. -Additional reporting by Abdel-Rahman Hussein.
