CAIRO: Egyptian champions AhlY revealed a record LE210 million budget for the 2008/2009 fiscal year.

The club made history. Last year s budget was LE202 million, but today it is LE210 million, Ahly said in a statement on their official website on Wednesday.

The club also recorded budget surplus of LE48 million, Ahly treasurer Mahmoud Bagneid added.

The Cairo giants, Africa s best team in the 20th century, are the wealthiest Egyptian club who usually spend big to recruit high-profile players.

They opted to sign unknown players this summer though, prompting rumors that they suffer from an economic crisis.

UAE newspaper Al-Bayan said earlier this week that Ahly would be forced to sell star playmaker Mohamed Abou-Trika to Ahly Dubai to ease their financial worries.

However, Abou-Trika eventually stayed put and Ahly made it clear they are financially very stable.

We spent LE42 million this year to strengthen our team, 12 million more than last year because we are fully aware that football is what matters most for the fans, Bagneid added.
