CAIRO: The Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide Mohamed Mahdy Akef denied reports claiming there is a “secret deal between the group and the government to release the group’s recently detained deputy leaders.
In a statement sent to Daily News Egypt, Akef said, “The Brotherhood refutes what Al-Shorouk daily newspaper published last Sunday about a deal between the group and the government.
“Nobody contacted us from the government … I have no idea where the newspaper got those claims, Akef added.
Aked said that while the newspaper claimed that “trusted sources gave them this information, he maintained that he does not know who the sources were. He added that the newspaper “made up things that I never said.
In its Sunday issue, Al-Shorouk newspaper published a story indicating that the Brotherhood has a secret deal with the government to release its recently detained members charged with money laundering, including prominent leader Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh, chairman of the Arab Doctors’ Union.
In related news, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention period of three Brotherhood leaders, who were detained with Aboul Fotouh, for 15 days.
The three members are Khaled Al-Beltagy, Adel Abdel Rahim and Mohamed Taha, who is in charge of the group’s office in Ismailia.
Earlier last week, the Supreme State Security Prosecution renewed the detention period of six of the recently detained members in the same case for 15 days pending investigations.
They are held on charges of terrorism, joining an illegal group and money laundering.
