Barclays Bank Egypt net profits up 28.5 pct

CAIRO: Barclays Bank Egypt posted a 28.5 percent increase in net profits to LE 124.5 million in the first half of the fiscal year, versus LE 96.9 million during the comparable period in 2008.

Net interest income rose to LE 437.7 million in the first six months of 2009, a 57.4 percent increase over LE 278.0 million in 2008.

Khalid Elgibaly, managing director of Barclays Bank Egypt, said, “The bank enjoys a strong capital base and sound risk management that have enabled the bank to continue making profits in spite of the global crisis.
