CAIRO: Egypt is currently reviewing six bids from international companies to provide service-related and technical consultancy for the nuclear safety department in the Egyptian nuclear program, Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younes said.
Companies from France, UK, Germany, Canada, US and South Korea were chosen out of total 17 bids presented last April, according to a statement.
The chosen consultancy firm will be tasked with improving employer efficiency by providing training on nuclear safety codes used in assessment and monitoring, as well as the ability to carry out quality control programs.
In October, Egypt said it will resume its nuclear program, which had been stalled for the past 30 years.
The consultancy services are meant to bring Egypt’s nuclear body up to standards.
Younes recently said that nuclear power plants would be established at three sites in Marsa Matrouh governorate, including one at Dabaa, in the near future. Nuclear power is expected to be Egypt’s major source of energy in the coming years.
Egypt has prepared a law that regulates the safety standards of nuclear and radioactive activities as well as the secure disposal of nuclear waste. The law will be discussed in parliament’s upcoming session.
Egypt is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
