CAIRO: Twenty lawyers filed a complaint at the prosecutor general’s office against Chairman of the Lawyers’ Syndicate Hamdy Khalifa, board member Hisham El-Kommy and the Giza Lawyers’ Syndicate board for allegedly embezzling public funds.
The lawyers are demanding that the Giza Lawyers’ Syndicate turn in the documents proving it received LE 19.7 million from the registration of contracts, claiming that the money wasn’t transferred to the General Lawyers’ Syndicate headed by Khalifa, in violation of law number 17 for 1983.
In addition, the lawyers accuse Khalifa for allegedly giving out bonuses using unregistered receipts, in violation of the rules set by the Central Accounting Agency.
“It is nothing new that someone like Khalifa who heads an institution like the lawyers syndicate would continuously face allegations like this, said Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsoud, prominent Muslim Brotherhood lawyer.
“There are many people against him who will come up with these claims just to damage his image in front of the public. On the other hand, there is the majority which has elected him to the chairman position and who support him and will not believe such accusations, he added.
