CAIRO: The American University in Cairo (AUC) awarded Leadership for Education and Development Program (LEAD) to 57 students, the university said on Tuesday.

The program offers full tuition scholarships to 58 students annually – one male and one female – from each of Egypt s governorates, according to an AUC statement.

Sohair Saad, director of LEAD, told Daily News Egypt that the program is very selective so only applicants with the top scores were accepted.

One of the students didn’t pass the series of tests, so the total number of students in the program totaled 57 instead of 58, Doaa Farag, AUC communications manager, told Daily News Egypt.

Saad said they are working on recruiting another student to fill that spot.

Students are evaluated based on several factors such as English tests, participation in certified extracurricular activities, an essay and an interview.

The LEAD program typically offers 54 scholarships annually but because two more governorates were added this year, the number of scholarships in turn increased from 54 to 58.

LEAD is a joint program with the US Agency for International Development, the Egyptian Ministry of International Cooperation and the American University in Cairo, according to AUC’s website.
