KUWAIT CITY: A senior Kuwaiti official says Iran has detained five Kuwaitis, an Egyptian and a Qatari who strayed into its territorial waters while fishing in the Gulf.

Khaled Al-Jarrallah, the undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry, said Tuesday that Tehran has promised to release the men after questioning. He said they were in two boats when they were arrested Saturday and are being held in the port of Abadan.

Kuwait s relations with Iran deteriorated during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war because of Kuwait s support for Baghdad. But Iran s neutral stand during the 1991 Gulf War that ended Iraq s brief occupation of Kuwait brought the countries closer. -AP
