CAIRO: A lawmaker of Egypt s ruling party accused of attacking a police station to free his nephew was arrested on Sunday after his parliamentary immunity was lifted, a security official said.
Mohamed Mandhur of the National Democratic Party was accused of storming Deshna police station with a group of supporters, attacking policemen and causing damage last week, said the official who requested anonymity.
The politician intended to free his nephew, who had told him he was locked up after being arrested at a cafe because he did not have his identity card on him.
Mandhur went to the police station in Deshna, near the old southern city of Luxor, along with several of his supporters, shouting I am a deputy and demanding his nephew s release, said the same source.
He allegedly injured a policeman during the fracas before being detained along with his supporters.
Informed of the incident, the interior ministry and state prosecutor requested the lifting of his parliamentary immunity, which occurred Saturday ahead of his arrest in Deshna.
Mandhur will remain in detention for at least four days while prosecutors investigate the incident. -AFP
