GAZA CITY: Sixteen Palestinians were injured on Wednesday when a smuggling tunnel along the Gaza-Egypt border collapsed, according to Gaza medics.

Muawiya Hassanein, head of Gaza emergency services, said one of the victims was in serious condition.

A network of hundreds of tunnels beneath the border provide a crucial economic lifeline to Gaza, which has been sealed off from all but vital humanitarian aid by Israel and Egypt since Hamas took over in June 2007.

More than 120 Palestinians have died in cave-ins or been killed by Israeli operations targeting the network since the Hamas takeover, medics say. -AFP
