CAIRO: The movement “No to Selling Egypt has launched a campaign to collect LE 20,000 from the public to pay the fine imposed on independent MP Alaa Abdel-Moneim by a court order as compensation to former Housing Minister Mohamed Ibrahim Soleiman.
“The movement ‘No to Selling Egypt’ is calling upon all honest Egyptians to support MP Mohamed Abdel-Moneim to pay the fine imposed on him for protecting public money on behalf of the people, read a statement released by the movement on Friday.
Abdel-Moneim had accused Soleiman of abusing his position as minister on one of the private satellite TV channels and filed a case against him to the Authority of Unlawful Acquisition, but the authority later withheld it.
As a result, Soleiman filed a compensation request against Abdel-Moeim for moral and ethical damages resulting from the accusations, which amounted to LE 500,000.
The court however settled the compensation amount to LE 20,000.
“We will be able to collect the amount to pay the fine quickly, exactly as in the case with the fine requested from [former ambassador] Ibrahim Youssry in the case of exporting gas to Israel, Yehya Hussein, the general coordinator of “No to Selling Egypt, told Daily News Egypt.
“The goal of the campaign is not only to collect the amount; it is a message to all activists and members of the opposition that the Egyptian people will stand by your side in your fight against corruption, especially in light of the evident increase in the number of fines imposed on politicians, members of the opposition and journalists, he added.
Meanwhile, according Abdel-Moneim, “The kick-off of the campaign made me feel at ease, that I am not alone in fighting corruption and defending the rights of Egyptian citizens.
“I’m calling upon all honest citizens in all fields: you are not alone in your fight for democracy and the welfare of this country, he added.
