CAIRO: The Lawyers’ Syndicate formed a fact-finding committee headed by Ramsis El-Naggar to prepare a report on the investigations into the Nagaa Hammadi shootings.
The committee, which comprises some of the syndicate’s board members including Khaled Abu Greisha, Omar Haridy, headed to Nagaa Hammadi Wednesday morning accompanied by Chairman of the Lawyers’ Syndicate Hamdy Khalifa who traveled to offer his condolences to the district’s Bishop Kirollos.
A shooting spree on Coptic Christmas Eve killed six Copts and one Muslim security guard, and left 10 critically injured in front of a church where worshippers were attending Christmas mass.
Three days later the Prosecutor General charged three men with premeditated murder over the fatal shooting.
The committee will monitor the investigations and prepare a report to submit to several government bodies such as the People’s Assembly, Cabinet and the Attorney General’s office.
“The committee will attend and follow the investigations closely and call for the Coptic victims’ civil rights in financial compensation, as well as ask the suspects some of the questions brought forth by the victims’ families and eye-witnesses, El-Naggar told Daily News Egypt.
El-Naggar explained that the committee will mainly investigate the possibility that the shooters were hired by anonymous culprits to commit the crime, adding that there are inconsistencies in their confessions.
“We plan on confronting the defendants with evidence we cannot disclose at this point that confirm the existence of anonymous inciters and prove that it wasn’t an individual crime, he said.
