BEIRUT: Police have clashed with stone-throwing protesters outside Egypt’s embassy in Beirut and at least three people were injured.

About 200 people took part in Saturday’s protest over Egypt’s construction of an underground steel wall along the border with Gaza.

Witnesses said baton-wielding riot police clashed with the protesters when they tried to push against a security barrier and began pelting the embassy with stones and lemons, adding that three were injured.

Ambulances were seen rushing to the scene.

The protesters are activists from left-wing groups which claim that by blocking the smuggling tunnels, the barrier would increase the hardships of Gaza’s inhabitants by depriving them of their last lifeline. -AP
