CAIRO: Egypt’s Prosecutor General has ordered the release of the Mohamed Ali Dynasty’s jewelry and antiques that have been kept in a special room in the Central Bank of Egypt for the past 57 years, according to Egynews.net.
Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud has decreed that 45 chests filled with jewelry and rare antiques be handed over to the Egyptian Antiquities Museum in preparation for their display in a specialized museum in Alexandria, as per a presidential decree issued in 1986.
In 1976, the General Arts Council filed a complaint to the General Prosecution office demanding the release of the royal cache, which was impounded following the 1952 military coup that ended the monarchy.
The complaint collected dust for 34 years until Mahmoud issued the recent decree upon an appeal presented by Ali El-Hawary, the Public Funds Prosecutor, to reopen the case.
The cache includes 4,000 pieces of antiques and precious stones, including a diamond-encrusted tray which French Empress Eugenie had presented to Khedive Ismail as the inauguration of the Suez Canal. -Daily News Egypt.
