CAIRO: Egyptian border police shot dead an Eritrean migrant on Monday as he tried to cross illegally into Israel, the third lethal shooting in as many days near the frontier, a security official said.
Two Eritreans accompanying the 26-year-old migrant were wounded in the gunfire, the official said.
In a separate incident, police arrested four Eritrean and five Ethiopian migrants, the official said, without specifying a date.
Police killed two other Eritrean migrants on Saturday as they tried to slip across the border with the Jewish state.
Egypt has stepped up controls on the 250-kilometer (150-mile) border, a major trafficking route for migrants from Africa, but it has drawn criticism for its readiness to use force to stop illegal crossings.
The United Nations has urged Egyptian forces to stop shooting African migrants trying to enter Israel. Around 60 have been killed in such incidents in the past two and half years.
