ISMAILIYA: Egyptian police have seized 41 brand-new cars near its border with Gaza that were to be smuggled into the Palestinian territory through tunnels, a security official said on Wednesday.

The official, asking not to be named, said the discovery was made during a police patrol on Tuesday. "According to information gathered by the security services, they were going to be smuggled into Gaza," he said.

Police have launched a search for the tunnel or tunnels which were to have been used.

A vast network of tunnels between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, constructed in the sandy earth to bypass a crippling Israeli blockade of Gaza, has weathered Israeli air strikes and Egyptian efforts to flood them with water and gas.

Egypt, citing national security and under US pressure, is building an underground iron wall in a new bid to tighten its porous Sinai border with the restive Palestinian territory.
