RAFAH: Egyptian police shot dead two African migrants on Sunday in separate incidents near the border with Israel, a security official said.

Police killed an Eritrean migrant who tried to enter Israel illegally, and in another incident along the border shot dead another migrant also trying to cross into the Jewish state. His nationality was unknown.

The official said warning shots were fired before police took aim directly at the migrants. Another 12 migrants were also arrested in the two incidents.

Fourteen African migrants have been killed since the beginning of year, and Cairo’s policy of shooting migrants who try to enter Israel has generated harsh criticism from human rights groups.

The migrants, many of them from Sudan and Eritrea, say they want to leave Egypt because of poverty and discrimination.
