CAIRO: A demonstration organized by the Kefaya Movement for Change on Tuesday condemned Egypt’s “betrayal” of the Palestinians in Gaza and called on Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia to cut ties with Israel and the United States.
A few dozen demonstrators gathered in front of the Shoura Council in downtown Cairo around 1 pm in the wake of Israel’s attack on a flotilla of aid ships bound to Gaza on Monday which left 10-19 people dead.
They called on President Hosni Mubarak to lift the siege on Gaza.
According to MENA, Mubarak ordered the opening of the Rafah border to allow aid into Gaza on Tuesday.
Protestors also compared Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, urging Nazif to take a stance against Israel’s attack of the aid ships which triggered worldwide condemnation.
In addition, protesters called for the boycott of parliamentarian elections that are currently underway and a presidential race slated for next year.
“End the siege, end the emergency laws, end the fraud,” they chanted.
Waving the Palestinian flag, others carried placards calling for the downfall of the president.
Among those present at the demonstration were general coordinator of the movement Abdel-Halim Qandil, one of the movement’s founders George Ishaq and political activist Gamila Ismail.
