KHARTOUM: Dozens of Sudanese rallied in the capital Khartoum on Thursday against Israel’s deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid fleet, while praising Turkey for its angry reaction.

"Down, down Israel" and "Down, down USA," chanted the demonstrators who urged motorists to drive over the top of an Israeli flag with a skull drawn over the Star of David.

The 60-odd protesters, who said they represented non-governmental organizations, later burned an Israeli flag in front of the United Nations headquarters in Khartoum before heading to the Turkish embassy.

"For every Arab man, Turkey is now a model of resistance," said Ahmed Mohammed Al-Asil, one of the demonstration’s organizers.

The protest came after nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed on Monday when Israeli commandos stormed a six-ship convoy carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza in international waters.

Of the dead, nine were Turkish nationals and the other a Turk with US citizenship, the office of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement.

Erdogan, whose conservative government has strengthened Turkey’s ties with the Arab world, launched a tirade against Israel after the raid, which he called a "bloody massacre."
