BAQUBA: A suicide bomber on a motorcycle targeting a US military convoy in central Iraq killed two civilians and wounded five other people on Wednesday, a security official said.

The attack, which occurred at around 12:00 pm (0900 GMT) in the town of Al-Muqdadiyah, 90 kilometers (55 miles) north of Baghdad in Diyala province, also damaged an American humvee, an official at Diyala operations command said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The US military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The blast in Al-Muqdadiyah, which lies northeast of the provincial capital Baquba, comes after March parliamentary elections which have still not resulted in a new government.

US and Iraqi security officials have warned that a long period of coalition formation could give insurgent groups an opportunity to further destabilize the country.

Government figures released last week showed that 337 people were killed as a result of violence in May, the fourth time this year that the overall death toll has been higher than the same month in 2009.
