CAIRO: The body of Khaled Saeid was exhumed and a new autopsy performed on Wednesday.

Mostafa Hussein, a doctor at the Nadeem Center for the Rehabilitation of the Victims of Violence, told Daily News Egypt that the autopsy was carried out at the site of burial and that it was attended by one of Saeid’s uncles.

Members of the public prosecution office took photographs of Saeid’s body, Hussein said.

This new autopsy was performed at the request of Saeid’s family after the original autopsy report concluded that the 28-year-old died from asphyxiation caused by swallowing a drug wrap.

Eyewitnesses to Saeid’s arrest in an internet cafe in Alexandria on Sunday June 6, however, say that he was beaten to death by two policemen.

Images of Saeid’s badly disfigured face taken after his death have caused outrage and protests have been held in both Cairo and Alexandria. More demonstrations are planned later this week.
