JERUSALEM: An Israeli military spokeswoman says border guards shot and killed an Egyptian infiltrator suspected of smuggling drugs into Israel.
The spokeswoman said Saturday that the man did not heed calls to stop before he was shot. Another man was injured and taken to the hospital. The spokeswoman said border guards had found a large quantity of hashish in the same area earlier, leading them to suspect the men were trying to smuggle it into Israel.
She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing military regulations.
Egyptian security officials said another two suspected smugglers surrendered to Israeli forces.
In recent months, Israel has been cracking down on rampant drug smuggling along its porous border with Egypt.
