JERUSALEM: Two senior aides of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu travelled to Cairo on Sunday for talks with Egypt’s intelligence chief, media reported.

National security adviser Uzi Arad and Yitzhak Molcho, a top Netanyahu adviser, met with Omar Suleiman to discuss the peace process, Israeli public radio reported.

Israeli officials refused to confirm the reports.

The aides also discussed the stalled negotiations with Gaza’s Hamas rulers over a prisoner exchange to free captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, Ynet news website reported.

The talks took place a day before Netanyahu was to head to the White House for talks with US President Barak Obama.

Egypt is one of only two Arab nations to sign a peace deal with the Jewish state and is a key mediator between Israel and the Palestinians.
