ABUJA: Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, chairman of regional bloc ECOWAS, will attend neighbouring Benin’s 50th independence anniversary on Sunday in Porto Novo, an official statement said.

Jonathan will attend the occasion along with other counterparts from the region — Senegal, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Togo and Burkina Faso — as well as those from Central Africa — Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Congo, the statement said.

High-level delegations from France, Kuwait and Morocco are also expected at the celebrations, added the statement from Jonathan’s office.

Nigeria and Benin — founding members of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) — are among several African countries that are celebrating the golden independence anniversary this year.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960.
