AMMAN: Saddam Hussein’s former attorney is suing a Jordanian daily for publishing excerpts of his book about the executed Iraqi leader, the newspaper’s lawyer said on Sunday.

"Khalil al-Dulaimi wants one million dinars (1.4 million dollars)" from the the Al-Ghad Arabic daily, Mohammad Safi told AFP.

He said that Dulaimi was suing the independent daily for "infringement on copyright."
"But what he is saying is not true because the newspaper published parts of the book with his permission," Safi said.

He said Dulaimi had alleged that several publishers had refused to print his book after Al-Ghad ran excerpts. He is "claiming that this had made him lose millions of dollars," Safi said, adding Dulaimi had finally published the book at his own expense.

Dulaimi was not immediately reachable for comment.

In the 480-page book, "Saddam Hussein out of US Prison: What Happened?" Dulaimi wrote that Saddam had planned to escape from his US-run prison with the help of loyalists, including former bodyguards.
Saddam was captured by US troops in December 2003, eight months after the fall of Baghdad, in a pit on a farm near his hometown of Tikrit.
He was hanged in December 2006 after being convicted of crimes against humanity for the killing of 148 Shiite civilians following an assassination attempt against him in 1982.
