Al-Ahly beats Ismaili in African Champions League

CAIRO: Wael Gomaa scored an injury-time goal to help Egyptian club Al-Ahly beat Ismaili 2-1 in the African Champions League.

Mohamed Talaat gave Al-Ahly the lead in the 58th minute on Sunday at Cairo International Stadium, but midfielder Mohamed Abou-Greisha equalized for Ismaili in the 80th.

It was Al-Ahly’s first victory in Group B.

On Saturday, Algerian club JS Kabylie beat Heartland of Nigeria 1-0 in the other Group B match to stay in first place. Striker Fares Hemitti scored from close range after a rebound from Sid Ali-Yahia’s cross from the right flank came off the far post.

In Group A, defending champion TP Mazembe was held to a 2-2 draw by Algerian club Entente Setif in Congo. Mazembe took the lead in the 15th minute through Bedi Mbenza, who intercepted a back pass from Farouk Belkaid.

Hemani Nabil equalized in the 39th and scored his second goal of the match in the 50th. Seven minutes later, Mazembe captain Tresor Mputu Mabi converted a penalty after defender Abdelmoumen Djabou handled in the penalty area.

Tunisian club Esperance earned its second win in Group A with a 1-0 victory over Dynamos of Zimbabwe on Saturday. Midfielder Osama Darragi scored the only goal of the match in the 84th.
