CAIRO: On Thursday residents of Sixth of October governorate were left with no water when the water supply was cut at around 8pm for almost 24 hours.
The main pipe at Sheikh Zayed, which supplies water for the entire area governorate, was ruptured, cutting off the supply of water, said Mohamed Hassan, a public relations employee for the Sixth of October hotline.
The pipe was repaired the next day by around 4pm the next day when service was resumed in the area.
Another area that is facing a water outage that has lasted much longer is New Cairo. Water cuts were reported on Friday due to the bursting of the two main pipes of Katamaya and New Cairo.
“One of the pipes was fixed on Saturday night and the other is currently being worked on,” said a source from The Holding Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation, who preferred to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
One New Cairo resident said her building has a built-in reservoir that saves water for such situations so they still have a limited amount of water at certain times.
But not everyone has been this lucky. For three days straight, some have been deprived of water and have been forced to shower at relatives’ homes or at sporting clubs.
Some have also gone to relatives’ homes to fill up water tanks and have had to buy bottled water.
