The electronic payment of custom fees over the past 10 months totaled LE 2 billion, Egypt’s finance minister said Monday.

The eastern area, that includes outlets of Port Said, Ismailia, Damietta, Suez, Ain Sokhna, Arish and Noweiba, achieved the highest electronic customs payment rate followed by the northern and western areas, Yousef Boutros-Ghali said in press statements.

Ghali expected that the rate of e-payment of customs in the central area, now estimated at 2 percent, to rise within the coming period after the end of development works at Cairo Airport.

Some 18 banks are now offering e-payment service through 1,065 branches, Ahmed El-Baz, adviser to the finance minister and head of the e-payment department at the ministry, said.
The e-payment project is introduced by the finance ministry in cooperation with the Central Bank of Egypt, he added.
