BLANTYRE: Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika on Monday left for an Iranian-African summit which will discuss how Tehran can assist with development of the continent.
"This is a very interesting and important trip. For the past three years, Iran has been inviting Africa to see what Iran can do for the continent,"
Mutharika, who chairs the African Union, told reporters before his departure from Lilongwe, the country’s administrative capital.
"We will discuss how we can develop unity between Iran and Africa," said Mutharika, who will also make a two-day state visit to Iran starting Thursday after the summit.
He said he will later proceed to the United Nations General Assembly in New York and on his return will visit Cuba "to strengthen unity between us." Mutharika’s visit to Cuba will be the first by a Malawian head of state. Some 30 Malawians are studying in Cuban universities, he said.
